Delhi gang-rape victim passes away 'peacefully' in Singapore

Singapore: A young woman who was flown to Singapore after her brutal gang-rape and torture in the Indian capital died here early Saturday, the Mount Elizabeth Hospital announced.

The victim, whose name has not been revealed, passed away "peacefully" at 4.45 am with her distraught family and Indian diplomats by her side, hospital official Kelvin Loh said in a statement.

"We are very sad to report that the patient passed away peacefully at 4.45 am," Chief Executive Loh said. "Her family and officials from the high commission of India were by her side."

Rishi Kapoor to play Sonam's dad in YRF's next

Rishi Kapoor has been signed to play the role of Sonam Kapoor's father in YRF's forthcoming film directed by Nupur Asthana. The film is a romantic comedy starring the fresh pair of Ayushmann and Sonam.

Habib Faisal, who is the writer of this film, was very keen to cast Rishi Kapoor in the said role and approached him. The film will be shot in Delhi and is expected to go on floors in February 2013.

Baby girl recovering in hospital after father threw her from roof

Dharwad, Karnataka: A baby girl in Karnataka is mending slowly in hospital after her father threw her from the top of a double-storey building he owns.

Doctors say she is no longer in critical condition; her leg is fractured.

Ramesh, 35, has been arrested on charges of trying to kill the 18-month-old baby because he wanted a boy.

He allegedly burnt his baby often with cigarettes.

The daughter he reportedly abused is his only child. His wife complained to neighbours after he threw the baby girl, and they then complained to the police.

Suicide by gang-raped teen highlights how police added to trauma

Patiala: A 17-year-old in Patiala who had been gang-raped earlier this month committed suicide this week because the police allegedly embarrassed her and refused to register a case for over a month.

"The police started pressuring her to either reach a financial settlement with her attackers or marry one of them," her sister has said. A video of the victim sharing details of her assault has been accessed by TV channels.

The police's inaction and the humiliation the teen was subjected to has been accepted by senior cops. Director General of Police Sumaid Singh Saini said, "The case was handled in the most unprofessional manner. Facts were concealed from senior officers. A probe has been ordered into the lapses and action will be taken. We had sent advisories that utmost sensitivity needs to be shown in cases of crimes against women, children and the elderly."

Ratan Tata resigns as Chairman, Cyrus Mistry takes charge

MUMBAI: Tata Group chief Ratan Tata on Tuesday stepped down as chairman of Tata Global Beverages with immediate effect, making way for successor Cyrus Mistry, who has also been inducted into the board of Indian Hotels Company.
In two separate filings to the Bombay Stock Exchange, the two firms said the respective meetings of the board of directors decided the changes as per Tata's retirement plans in December 2012.

Smoking poster: Mohanlal lands in trouble

After actress Mythili, against whom the Health Department filed a case for appearing on a film poster smoking a cigarette, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has also landed in trouble in a similar case.

A summons has been issued to Mohanlal by the Judicial First Class Magistrate here to appear in person on March 18 after the Health Department filed a case against him for appearing in a poster holding a cigar in the advertisement for his latest film " Karma Yodha."

Summons has also been issued to the film's director Major Ravi, production company Manager and Managers of the three theatres where the film is being screened.

The case against Mythili, for appearing in the posters of the film " Matinee" smoking cigarette, is also being taken up on March 18, department sources said.

All posters of Mythili and Mohanlal showing smoking scenes have been removed from the city as they violated the stringent conditions imposed on advertisements for tobacco products, the sources said.

Massive protests over Delhi gang rape, PM meets Shinde

Minister of state for home RPN Singh said police had been asked to exercise maximum restraint and the government was acting on people's demands.

The minister told a news channel that police could not allow people to break barricades and enter government buildings.

Calling for calm, he said there was no police action at places where protesters were peaceful.

Movie review: Dabangg 2

Dabangg 2 box office prediction: Salman Khan’s movie to cross the Rs 200 crore mark?

Salman Khan’s Dabangg 2 has created quite a bit of hype in the last 15 days. And thanks to it all, our feathered friends expect the movie to cross the coveted Rs 200 crore mark this time around. Now if that isn’t good news, what is?

And guess once that happens, the Rs 100 crore mark will become passé. Why, with almost every other movie of all the actors including Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor earning Rs 100 crores at the box office, the old mark has lost some of its charm. Hai na?

What’s more, Salman Khan almost missed touching the Rs 200 crore mark with Ek Tha Tiger that braked at Rs 190 crores. Tch tch! But with Dabangg 2, trade analysts sound almost confident that the movie will cross the brand new magic number.

“On its release, Dabangg had crossed the Rs 140 crore mark and two years down the line, the buzz as well as the market has increased manifold. Moreover this is a true blue sequel. The hype is unprecedented and there is no reason why Rs 200 crores won’t be a possibility,” chirped a birdie.

Ekta Kapoor joins hands with Kamal Haasan in Vishwaroopam’s war with multiplexes

When Kamal Haasan decided to take the road less travelled by planning to release Vishwaroopam on television through direct-to-home (DTH) platform, the multiplex owners got furious. And as a result they have refused to screen the movie in their theatres. Tch tch!

While birdies chirp that Haasan has earned quite a lot by selling the premiere rights to DTH, not releasing the movie in a theatre would still dampen its outcome, right? So Kamal is trying to convince the multiplex owners to relent.

Time for Kohli to replace Dhoni as India captain: Gavaskar

NAGPUR: Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar feels young Virat Kohli is the future of Indian cricket and he is ready to take up the captaincy job from incumbent Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the aftermath of the series defeat against England.

England broke the 28-year-old jinx by defeating India 2-1 verdict in the Test series after the fourth and final match ended in a draw on Monday.

Gavaskar said it is time the selectors look to the future as Dhoni seemed out of sorts in this series.

"Till the fourth day of this Test I said there is no alternative to Mahendra Singh Dhoni, but now that Virat (Kohli) has come up with a 100 under trying circumstances I think he has discovered a good part about himself. I think he is ready to take on the mantle," the former India skipper said.

Delhi student critical after being gang-raped in moving bus, four held

NEW DELHI: A 23-year-old woman was battling for life here on Monday after a bunch of men raped her in a moving bus and threw her out on the road along with her badly beaten boyfriend, officials said.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit expressed her disgust over the incident even as police detained four suspects for the overnight crime and said they were looking for other accomplices.

While the 28-year-old boyfriend was discharged from hospital on Monday morning, the young woman, whose name is being withheld, was on ventilator at the Safdarjung Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Exit polls predict massive win for BJP in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: Voting has ended for the Gujarat assembly elections 2012 on Sunday with millions casting their ballot at 23, 318 polling booths at Kutch, north and central Gujarat in the second and final phase of the elections.

Elections in the second phase were held in 95 of the 182 constituencies.

According to the initial exit poll results coming from C-Voter and Chanakya, incumbant chief minister Narendra Modi is all set to retain power with a massive victory.

C-Voter predicts BJP could win 124 out of 182 seats while Chanakya predicts 140 seats for the BJP. Also, BJP is expected to get 46 per cent of the total vote share.

According to C-Voter Congress can win 54 seats with 37 per cent of vote share in Gujarat.

Unemployed man kills son in Delhi

The accused, Subhash Aggarwal, was arrested from his house in Sector 18 of north Delhi's Rohini area, where the incident took place late Friday night.

Aggarwal had five children, including the 18-year-old victim Shubham, who was studying engineering in a private college in Sonepat, Haryana.

According to police, the accused had been unemployed for the last one year. Before that, he had been a property dealer. "Frequent arguments took place in the house as he (Aggarwal) was not earning," police said.

A heated argument ensued Friday night between the father-son duo. A fuming Aggarwal went to his son's room at around 1 a.m. and shot him in the abdomen with a double-barrel rifle.

India urged to reject changes in anti-terror law

The Indian parliament should reject proposed amendments to its counterterrorism act that could lead to further misuse of the draconian law, Human Rights Watch has said.

Parliament should call on the government to withdraw the amendments to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967 (UAPA), which is scheduled for a vote in the Rajya Sabha Monday. On Nov 30, the Lok Sabha passed the amendments to the UAPA, India's principal counter-terrorism law, without significant input or scrutiny from the general public or civil society groups.

The amendments would allow the government broad leeway to increase bans on proscribed organisations to five years and widen the definition of a person to any association of individuals. "While India has a responsibility to protect citizens from terror attacks, the counter-terrorism law has long been abused to detain suspects for excessive periods, file charges on fabricated evidence, and ban organisations without due process of law," said Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director at Human Rights Watch.

"These amendments will make the law an even more dangerous tool in the hands of officials who seek to oppress peaceful critics and minority communities."

Salman throws a bash for Guns ‘n’ Roses team

When the otherwise reclusive Salman Khan decides to party, he does it in style. While all of Mumbai went crazy about the Guns ‘n' Roses concert, Salman did one better - he threw a private bash for the band! This was done at the Khan owned nightclub Royalty, where GNR went directly after the show.

Most thrilled among the guests was Kangna, who, when introduced to Axl Rose, was compared by him to Hollywood hottie, Jennifer Garner! Kangs is now tripping on more than rock music! VIdya Balan’s wedding details revealed

Vidya Balan and Siddharth Roy Kapur are finally in wedding mode with pre-wedding functions on in full swing! A source says, "The first function that kickstarted the celebrations was a formal dinner attended only by Vidya and Siddharth's family members. No one from Bollywood was seen. The venue was A La Mode Banquets in Juhu just behind Ekta Kapoor's bungalow. Vidya and Siddharth did pose for the paparazzi, since they caught them just as they were about to leave the venue at night."

However, Vidya was clever at keeping the media guessing where the function was being held! The paparazzi initially landed outside her residence in Khar but Vidya smartly exited through the backdoor. She distracted the media by sending her Mercedes to the front gate while she took off easily from behind! The media then went on a hunt to various locations - Khar, Chembur, Cuffe Parade and finally reached the actual location.

The ‘Dhak Dhak’ girl is getting tech-savvy

After launching a personal website, Bollywood's dancing diva Madhuri Dixit has taken a new step to get closer to her fans through a mobile application.

The application, available on all iOS devices, complements her official web page www.madhuridixit-nene.com. 'People carry a phone with them all the time, so an app (application) is a wonderful device to stay connected with fans in their time and space,' the 45-year-old said in a statement.

The application, currently available on all iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, and iPod), will connect Madhuri's fans to her pictures, videos and exclusive content on beauty, fashion and dance. It will soon also be available on Android phones.

Both actresses were being considered for Akshay Kumar's next film

It looks like Parineeti's hopes of being cast opposite Akshay Kumar will not materialize any time soon. Akki is not yet ready to let go of his new favourite, Sonakshi Sinha. One hears that Sonakshi is apparently the girl cast opposite Akshay in AR Murugadoss's ‘Thupakki' and not Parineeti who was also in the race. Her spokesperson recently confirmed that she is indeed not doing the film. This news stems from the fact that both Akshay and Sonakshi saw the original Tamil action thriller together to get a feel of it, a few days ago. Sonakshi must be on cloud nine since this marks her third film with Akki since last year after ‘Joker' and ‘Rowdy Rathore'.

But what was the real reason why she got the role? A source suggests, "Sonakshi was quite upset with him when she wasn't considered as a strong contender for this role, despite supporting him during the ‘Joker' fiasco. In addition, she has worked with him twice and done a song for his home production ‘Oh My God!' So she assumed she would be considered as the lead for one of his biggest films of next year. One assumes that in order to keep her happy and for the sake of loyalty, he signed her on."
