Accused gets 8-year RI for raping South Korean tourist

Jabalpur: A court in Umariya has sentenced a resort manager to eight years' rigorous imprisonment for raping a South Korean woman tourist on January 14 this year in Bandhavgarh.

Umariya District and Sessions Judge Akhilesh Pandya, while announcing the sentence on Tuesday, also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on the accused resort manager Deepak Vishwakarma.

In case Vishwakarma fails to pay the fine, the term of his sentence would be extended by another three months.

The judge also sentenced Vishwakarma to one-year rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1,000 under sections 7 and 14 of the Foreigners Act.

The court, however, exonerated him of the charge of causing hurt by means of poison with the intention to commit an offence.

The sentences will run concurrently, the court added.

408 child labourers rescued in Punjab

Chandigarh: Labour department in Punjab has successfully rescued over 408 children engaged as child labour in the state.

The children were rescued during a special drive from 17 to 23 June this year, when the state was observing child labour eradication week.

During raids, 408 cases of child labour were detected and 337 offenders were issued challans for the offence, he said.

Among these cases, 203 children were found to be working in dangerous occupations. Maximum 99 cases of child labour were found in Ludhiana district, 59 in Sangrur, 47 in Amritsar and 31 in Jalandhar district, Jayani said.

Besides these raids, special seminars were organised for sensitising people so that children belonging to poor families could also enjoy their childhood, the minister said.

Man sentenced to 10 years' jail for raping minor daughter

Faridkot: A 45-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment for raping his minor daughter for over two years.

A local court has also imposed a fine of Rs 7,500 on Pappu Singh, resident of Deviwala Road in Kotkapura, after finding him guilty of the charges, saying that the accused was supposed to protect his daughter after the death of his wife.

Although Singh pleaded innocent, the victim's statement and her medical examination reports formed the basis for the court to rule that the accused had physically abused his minor daughter.

Singh started raping his daughter after the death of his wife and the case in the matter was registered on October 31, 2012.
